David Lopez had a plan, and executed it to perfection. He joined the early breakaway, marked all the attacks, and then hit the dwindling group when it hurt to open a time gap and solo to victory in Alcoy. Lopez stayed the breakaway after it dwindled from 15 to 5 riders, and then made his final move with about 5 km to go. Lopez attacked on the penultimate descent and then held off a charging Roman Kreuzinger on the final climb to grab himself the win. Kreuzinger and the rest of the group were not expecting him to attack, and certainly did not expect him to hold his gap after he got clear. He defied both expectations, and proved that sometimes the early morning breakaway isn't such a bad idea. David Moncoutie also enjoyed success in the break.

Moncoutie won a few mountain sprints and put himself ahead in the race for yet another Vuelta mountains title. The rest of the field stayed together for the most part, with Anton, Nibali, and Rodriguez finishing together. There was some excitement, though, as Jean-Christophe Peraud in the breakaway appeared to be the virtual GC leader until some hard chasing brought the gap back under 7 minutes. Peraud did move up to 5th, 52 seconds behind.

Tomorrow is a rest day.
