ATOC: Same Book, New Chapter!

Team Sky set up another picture perfect leadout for Ben Swift today. They moved him to the front as the field approached Modesto, controlled the pace through the entire final lap around the city, and Greg Henderson was set to bring him to the line when...uh oh. Where's Swifty? He was there, but just a bit too far back from Henderson's powerful leadout.

But Henderson's leadout was so powerful that he was able to look back, realize that Swift isn't behind him, and then coast across the line to take the stage himself.

It was an unconventional but effective ending to another rather dreary looking but certainly not dreary in spirit stage.

Much of the morning buzz amongst the riders was that this would be the day for a breakaway to survive, so a group of 8 ambitious small team riders was quick to form off the front. They were given almost 7 minutes at the max, but slowly were reeled back into oblivion as the kms winded down.

Then the wind came...

The crosswinds that many had expected to be a factor early hit the riders quite late and splintered the peloton into pieces during the run into the finish. Teams scrambled to organize earlier than they would have in order to bring their sprinters and GC men safely to the front, and most succeeded, but some like Andy Schleck and Thor Hushovd found themselves in a spot of bother.

Luckily for Andy, Thor, and almost everyone else who missed the split, a sweeping left hand bend combined with a strong headwind was able to slow up the Sky driven peloton long enough that they could regroup and safely position themselves up front. The only somewhat notable rider that was impacted by the split was Lars Boom, who would lose a bit less than a minute for the day.
The field ditched the wind when they started their first of several laps around Modesto but they found a new problem...crashes.

Jens Voigt was the first to be impacted when he took a spill along with 2 other riders on the penultimate lap. He would finish the stage, but lost significant time.

This caused some urgency in the field, and the Canadian team Spidertech took control of the race at this point. They brought up nearly everyone on the team to work for sprinter Kevin Lacombe (who finished 6th) and did an admirable job for such a small team, but it was soon time for the big dogs to play.

Saxo Bank was the first team to organize, but soon Sky would take over just like yesterday, and again lock sprinting powerhouses HTC and Garmin out. The crashes were not over yet, though, because a pair of ugly looking falls by Baden Cooke and Michael Matthews (both sprint contenders) disrupted the field in the final kilometer. Both men seemed ok and did finish the stage.
Henderson brought them to the line, and he would bring them home too. He kicked in the hopes that Swift would jump on his wheel, but nobody did and he was all alone on his way to the victory. Hushovd was the first to make a surge to catch him, and soon Haedo and Sagan would also try their hands, but none could reel in the quick Kiwi who was still surprised that he won even when raising his arms in celebration.

Henderson took the yellow jersey away from his teammate via a tiebreaker. Swift finished the day in 11th, which is the same place Henderson finished yesterday, so it will go to Henderson because he is the most recent winner.

The sprinters had their fun, but now it's time to switch gears. We very well could see the field slaughtered on Mt Hamilton and then a short list of race favorites dueling it out on the summit finish at the Sierra Road. Will Andy Schleck go all out? Will Levi seek to take control already? A youngster like Van Garderen? We'll just have to wait and see...

ATOC: Sky Storm Leads to a Swift Ending!

Despite the best efforts of the UCI, there is still a place for team dynamics in cycling, and those same dynamics took center stage Monday afternoon in Sacramento when Team Sky gave their man Ben Swift one of the more impressive leadouts you will ever see.

The race started out like yesterday with some weather problems, but this time the officials were able to successfully shorten the race and avoid the threat of snow.

The shortened course probably had no influence on the overall result anyway, because it was set to be a sprint finish regardless. That did not stop a few brave riders from trying for a different result. Laszlo Bodrogi, Jamey Driscoll (voted most aggressive), Timon Seubert, and Ben Jacques-Maynes tried to escape the pack, but were promptly reeled in just as the field began its laps around Sac-town leading into the finish. Things were going smoothly until...uh oh...here comes the rain.

This rain added a new dynamic to the approach to the finish, as the teams had to be extra cautious on the wet slippery roads when bringing their riders to the front. HTC put Goss in position, Liquigas the same for Sagan, Garmin for Hushovd, and Saxo Bank worked their man JJ Haedo into the mix but Sky took a different approach.

We want to make sure that our man Ben Swift has a solid leadout at the finish...so why not bring everybody? Sky brought 5 riders to dominate the peloton for the entire final lap around Sacramento, leading up to the duo of Greg Henderson and Ben Swift at the end.

Matt Goss launched on the far left and he kicked very early. While riders scrambled for his wheel, Henderson promptly finished his leadout and then unleashed Ben Swift to track down Goss at the line. Swift took him in a drag race, and then Peter Sagan unleashed a quick burst to move up to 2nd.

Sagan could have very well had a shot at the stage but he was caught between the Sky leadout and several slower sprinters fighting behind them. He was briefly "boxed in" and had little time to recover before Swift was already on his way.

Canadian Kevin Lacombe brought home a surprising 4th for his Spidertech team while Saxo ace JJ Haedo settled for 5th. 7 for Hushovd, 8 for Phinney, Bling Matthews in 14th, and just about everybody else finished at the same time.

Good way to kick off the race. Finally. It was an accident free day with minimal damage to the race favorites and almost no impact by the slightly inclimate weather. Ben Swift is somewhat optimistic at his chances to defend his jersey tomorrow, although many think that tomorrow will fall to a breakaway.

It looks like a flat sprinter stage, but the potential for Qatar-like crosswinds in certain parts of California on the route could break apart the field and possibly allow for a small group to escape.

ATOC: Stage 1 Snowed Out

The buzz at the start line for stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California was among the best in the sport as numerous fans lined up for a chance to see the start of America's premiere event.

And then they were off! And sprinting right off the start too! ...well, sprinting to get back on the buses. The only thing cyclists hate more than bitter cold is bad road conditions, so a combination of those 2 surely would have lead to disaster.

The stage was initially set to be postponed to 1:15 local time and shortened significantly, but the conditions were just too bad to risk it. It really is a shame for all the fans that turned up but just look at these roads. They'd be nuts to let them ride in this.

The even scarier part is that poor weather again threatens the start of the race tomorrow. This late-spring snowstorm sweeping across the Sierra region certainly could wreak havoc on this event, but I (and the race officials) am still optimistic that they will get going tomorrow.

Giro: Guns Up!

After yesterday we should have all probably expected it. The best rider in cycling was hungry for a big win, and would not be denied a second time. In fact, he wanted to win so much that he not only took stage 9 but put a massive gap between himself and his nearest chasers and really grabbed this race by the horns.

The day started like any other with an early breakaway, but just as the field hit Mt Etna with under 7 km to go, Contador made his move and blew the entire race apart. Scarponi desperately tried to follow, but was soon dropped. Jose Rujano was the only man able to stick with Contador, but he was no threat to the GC so Contador was content to drag him until the finish.

Contador had no problem cruising for the stage victory, but even more importantly he distanced himself quite a bit to his nearest rivals.

Is it game over? Well, as a pseudo-media source that wants to have people continue to watch the Giro I'm inclined to say no...but yea, probably. Unless Contador encounters a problem of some sort I can't see anyone really catching him at this point. With Menchov essentially out of the picture it would take probably 2 determined efforts by either Nibali or Scarponi to make up the time, and although they are certainly capable of bringing the pain, I just can't see Contador dropping that much time.
