Thomas Voeckler is quite the cyclist, but sometimes its better to be lucky than good. Voeckler pounced on the opportunity afforded him by a late failed breakaway and took advantage of the confusion to launch his own successful bid for the race. Race favorites Ryder Hesjedal and Damiano Cunego among others launched their final attack after the morning breakaway was caught but they just did not have enough steam to reach the finish line. This is when Voeckler moved into action, accelerating in the final 1000 m to solo to victory. Edvald Boasson-Hagen was the strongest of the peloton, with Robert Gesink right behind him to round out the podium.
