Sprinter Andre Greipel has agreed to ride with Omega Pharma Lotto team for the 2011 season. This comes after Greipel yet again lost out on a Tour spot to Cavendish, and he decided it was time for a change. I think this move may end up working out well for everyone. What it Means...
For Greipel:
To put it bluntly, Greipel was going nowhere with HTC Columbia due to the depth of sprinters there. Obviously Cav would be number 1 but Greipel still had to out-perform top leadout man Renshaw and also Matthew Goss just to be #2 sprinter. I think he could have gotten himself to the number 2 position, but he will surely be #1 for Omega Pharma Lotto. I think this could turn out to be a great move for Greipel in the long run.
For Omega Lotto:
Simple enough. They got themselves a talented young sprinter who can give them a shot at a stage in any event he enters. He is not quite on the level of Cav and Petacchi, but has the potential to get there. This also means that Lotto will need to adapt their Grand Tour rosters for a 2 pronged attack. They have Van Den Broeck and his helpers, and now they will also need to assemble a leadout for Greipel on the flat stages.
For HTC Columbia:
The loss of Greipel shouldn't impact them too badly, but they are now likely in a mad scramble to bring back Cavendish. They previously had Greipel slated as their backup if Cav were to leave at the end of the year, so they would be best not to let him leave. If he does, the competition for team sprinter will likely be between Renshaw and Goss.
