Eneco: One Last Glory

Moerenhout takes stage, Tony Martin in yellow. Koos Moerenhout will be retiring at the end of this year, but he felt he needed to go out with a bang. Is there any better way to go out with a bang than a Pro Tour stage win and a GC chance. Moerenhout got into a late breakaway with Tony Martin and the two managed to put almost minute and a half on the first chase group. Martin gained the yellow jersey (he was ahead of Moerenhout at the beginning of the day) and looks very good to hold it for the rest of the race. Many of the upcoming stages are flat enough to fend off attacks rather easily and the only remaining major stage is the final time trial, which happens to be Tony's specialty. The two made their move with about 30 km to after catching a group containing Edvald Boasson-Hagen. It was another rough day for EBH, who tried to solo his way up to the 2 leaders after being caught but just did not have it in the tank. He finished in the first chase group, and did still manage to hold on to his top 5 position. Jurgen Van Den Broeck had a horrible day, losing over 20 minutes to the leaders and obliterating his GC hopes.
