There really isn't a whole lot to preview in depth about this race, due to the large percentage of "unknown" riders and the lack of big name guys. The one rider to especially keep an eye on is Alessandro Ballan of BMC, who will be looking to defend his title in 2009. Ballan is coming off a strong Tour de France, and is backed up by a strong BMC squad (possibly the strongest in the race). There will be several riders, like Caisse d'Epargne's Vasili Kiryienka and Liquigas Sylwester Szmyd, but Ballan should be the heavy favorite. Perhaps the more intriguing storyline of the race will be the stage battles between the sprinters. There are some pretty high caliber sprinters, like Lampre's Grega Bole, Liquigas Peter Sagan, HTC's Andre Greipel, and JJ Haedo of Saxo Bank. Their "in-fights" for stage wins should be incredibly entertaining, as Greipel, Sagan, and Bole are considered three of the most promising young sprinters for the future.
