Luis Leon Sanchez played his cards perfectly with the daily breakaways, and got himself his biggest one-day win of his career. He defied strategy and joined the daily breakaway, especially after he saw the company of the riders he would be with.
After fluctuating throughout most of the day, the final run in to San Sabastien found a three man powerhouse breakaway featuring Sanchez, Alexandre Vinokourov, and Carlos Sastre being chased by the likes of Ryder Hesjedal, Joaquim Rodriguez, and Robert Gesink. After the three knew they would be clear, they started the cat-mouse game and immediately Sanchez got the upper hand. He forced Vinokourov to lead out the sprint and then quickly jumped from his wheel to grab himself the win. This race carried quite a bit of prestige this year due to the number of "big namers" that chose to enter the one day journey through the Basque contryside less than a week after finishing the Tour de France. Results
