To win the Amstel Gold Race, you don't need to be dominant all day. You don't even need to be dominant for an extended period of time, because all that matters is that you are the best rider on the road when it counts. Just ask Philippe Gilbert, as he has it nailed down to a science.
In a race traditionally dominated by the last 1000 meters, there is really quite little to say about the rest of it. Carlos Barredo tried his hand in a failed early breakaway, and some outside contenders like Damiano Cunego and Luis Leon Sanchez were active early, but nothing ever materialized until the last 30 km.As the tempo picked up and the field started to thin out, Frank Schleck and Fabian Cancellara became caught up in a multi-rider crash near the back of the peloton. Both riders safely got up and rejoined the fields, but their efforts to regroup cost them most of their energy and they really didn't have much to offer after that.
As the race got even closer to the finish, Andy Schleck realized that his brother wouldn't be much help to him so he decided to give it a go by himself with under 15 kms to go.
He was able to achieve separation and really gave it all he had, but Gilbert brought himself to the front of the small (but elite) group of chasers and dragged them right back to his wheel as the field hit the final Cauberg climb. Was it a mistake by Andy? Tactically, I'd say yes. He would have probably had the best opportunity if he waited until the Cauberg, and then hit Gilbert at the steepest part of the climb. Instead, he expended most of his energy on the run up to the Cauberg, and quickly ran out of steam when he hit the actual climb.
Joaquim Rodriguez was the first to catch Schleck when he launched a powerful kick of his own, but Gilbert was on his wheel the entire time. Eventually Gilbert simply powered right past the Spaniard and opened a gap so quickly that he could have probably turned around and said "thanks for the leadout mate."
As Gilbert said after the race, this is the biggest week of the year for him. His ultimate goal is Liege Bastogne Liege but he's more than happy to add another one of these to his profile as well. I'd look for many of these same players to be a factor in LBL, as well as Fleche Wallone earlier in the week. 1. Philippe Gilbert (BEL), Omega Pharma-Lotto, 6:30:44
