Alberto Contador is again back on top.The Spaniard proved why he is still one of the best in the business Wednesday with a convincing victory on the Col de Pal to grab the stage and control of the General Classification.
Contador hung in the peloton until the final showdown and his teammates set him up perfectly for the win. As usual, Daniel Navarro slayed the field and then Contador made his move. Only Levi Leipheimer was able to match him at the time, but he would soon be dropped as well.
Michele Scarponi joined Leipheimer and together they finished 2nd and 3rd, 23 seconds behind Contador.
Some of the favorites like Basso and Evans managed to stay within a minute (and still somewhat in contention) but I really can't see anybody overtaking Contador barring an unfortunate mishap.
Saxo Bank executed to perfection today. It was really the first chance they had to dry run their strategy for the climbs in the Grand Tours, and they controlled the peloton to perfection. It also helps that Contador is on exceptional form this week.
