It was a day for Italy. In the first Italian race of the year, one of the most promising young riders from Italy won the first race of the year for the world's premiere Italian pro-cycling team. 21 year old Elia Viviani was set up perfectly by his team and seized the opportunity with a sprint win in Donoratico.

While the entire Liquigas team did a fine job, it was Viviani's last leadout man that is really worth noting. Young Slovakian Peter Sagan (considered widely to be one of the best young riders in the world) powered his teammate to the finish and then somehow managed to hold on to 4th place after peeling away. I know 4th doesn't really mean anything, but it's incredibly impressive to hold that kind of speed after going all out on a leadout.
Roberto Ferrari kept his fine 2011 rolling with a 2nd place finish and young Elia Favilli completed the Italian sweep with a strong showing in 3rd.

1. Elia Viviani
2. Roberto Ferrari
3. Elia Favilli
