John Degenkolb may be known to most for being a part of one of the closest finishes in cycling history for third place in last year's U23 race, but he has yet to attain anywhere near the status of a racer like Farrar or even Matthews (who won that same race). But he was making the right moves today, and launched a clever attack while many of the sprinters were still in their leadout. He used a roundabout to open a small gap over the field and then "just sprinted and didn't look back."
This is Degenkolb's first ProTour win (after just a few weeks of racing). Every win is important for a young sprinter, but especially one on a team so stacked as HTC is.
Alberto Contador had a nice day of riding, and finished right up near the front of the field.
Right next to him was Philippe Gilbert, who still holds a lead in the General Classification after his win yesterday. Aside from a small group of guys, everyone else finished all together today.1. John Degenkolb
