Matthews Takes U23

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!The Austrailians finally got their win. After a near miss by Durbridge for the win on Wednesday and a 4th and 5th in the Elite Mens TT the home nation finally saw a winner after Michael Matthews raised his arms in victory at the finish line. Matthews got a great slip off of Taylor Phinney's wheel to fly past the American and then hold off German John Degenkolb for the win. Phinney had some drama of his own, tying with Guillaume Boivin for bronze (more in a separate post). On the side of the weird and wild, the early morning breakaway featured Ben King joined by none other than Ben King. No, this is not a typo but just 2 riders who share the same name with one being from Australia and the other American. The only name that mattered in the end was Matthews, though, and let the celebrating begin down in Geelong.
